➤ The sustainable material: cotton

Cotton is a natural plant fiber that thrives in tropical and subtropical areas and has been used by humans for thousands of years. For our products, we source sustainably harvested cotton from local farmers in Java. The fields are naturally fertilized and the cotton balls are picked by hand. After ginning, the cotton is pressed into bales, combed and spun into yarn by hand. Our cotton is skin-friendly and free from chemical treatments and therefore not suitable for the dryer.


➤ Our production partners: selected based on fair trade criteria

When selecting our local production partners, we focus on fair pay, safe working conditions and reasonable working hours. We work exclusively with small family businesses with a maximum of 20 to 30 employees. They are all experienced craftsmen of legal age. Older people in particular, who can no longer work in agriculture, benefit from jobs in the craft sector, which allows them to use the skills they have learned from an early age to earn money and pass on traditional production methods to the younger generation. They have often told us how happy they are that they can create something meaningful with this work and earn a good income. Since all work steps are carried out by hand, the production process produces hardly any greenhouse gas emissions. We guarantee all this through regular site visits and continuous personal contact with the companies.


➤ The production process: from raw material to finished cushion cover

For our Untuk rugs, skilled artisans on the Indonesian island of Java create a thick, soft fabric using fine cotton yarn on traditional hand looms. A special weaving technique is used, in which rhythmic movements of the shuttle loosen the fibers during weaving, creating the soft, airy texture. As a final step, the delicate fringes are attached by hand. Each rug takes about an hour to complete.
